subaru and rally : The Subaru World Rally Team will be nominating Richard Burns and PetterSolberg for the rally, with Markko Martin fielding a third factoryImpreza WRC2001.The Swedish Rally also marks the start of the FIA Teams' Cup contest for2001, and Allstars drivers Hamed Al Wahaibi and Frederic Dor are enteredin a pair of Subaru Impreza MY2001 specification cars. The Subaru World Rally Team will be running three Impreza WRC2001 carson the rally. Each of which has been specially prepared for the uniqueconditions found on the Swedish stages. Of particular note in Sweden areregulations that allow up to 20mm tungsten studs in the tyres. In theperiod since Monte Carlo the team have also identified and rectified thecause of Richard Burns and Markko Martin's electrical failures.According to Chief Engineer Christian Loriaux, conditions in Swedenrequire a complex set up: "After the Safari Rally of Kenya, Sweden isthe second fastest event in the Championship, and this, combined withthe unusual stage surfaces and freezing temperatures demand a veryspecialised set up. Very often the car preparation for a rally willinvolve fine-tuning a standard gravel or tarmac set-up, but Sweden andSafari are the two exceptions. It's a completely different set of rulesfor these two events. In Sweden the suspension has to be quite soft togenerate good grip, but firm enough to give the drivers confidence inthe stability at high speeds. The high-speed corners also make this arally where the aerodynamic devices on the car make a significantdifference. Temperatures can drop to -30 degrees Celsius, so it's alsoimportant to protect the cooling system. We will probably blank offparts of the radiator system to prevent damage from the wind chill. Thecars will be running on 16inch wheel rims fitted with studded tyres thatare just 135mmm wide to achieve a high-pressure contact patch on theroad. Finally, and just in case, regulations state that each car mustcarry two snow shovels!"

Themechanical problem that sidelined me in Monte has been identified andsorted and this rally is one of my favourites in the Championship. It'sa very high-speed event - and I enjoy those the best. You have to adaptyour driving style quite a lot, it's not a place to be taking thingsgently, you've got to be very aggressive to get the studs grippingproperly. In Sweden I'll be concentrating on getting very accurate pacenotes as it's these that give you the confidence to throw the cararound" subaru and rally : Petter Solberg "I haven't driven here since 1999, but I'm lookingforward to getting back on the snow again. Having spent a lot of timedriving on the snow in Norway the conditions are quite familiar to meand I think that could give me a slight advantage. There are a lot ofgood local drivers on this event - including my brother Henning! But I'mnot feeling pressured by that audience I'm just going to try and get agood solid result for the team."Markko Martin "My main objective for Sweden is to actually do somestages, I really want to be able to get some good competitive experienceof the car. Sweden is a rally I've done twice before so I know roughlywhat to expect and it's a surface that I enjoy driving on. We've hadsome good experiences testing, and using the latest development tyresfrom Pirelli. The car seems to handle very well in these conditions andthe amount of grip available in corners with the studs is amazing.Hamed Al Wahaibi "The Teams' Cup will be very competitive this year withall entrants having to compete in the same rallies - it's going to betough out there. But the experience I gained last year in my firstseason with a World Rally Car, and now with the MY2001 Impreza and withthe Allstars back-up, will put me in a good position. I believe I've gota winning combination and I'm going all out to win the Teams' Cup" subaru and rally : Achim Mörtl signs for 555 Subaru World Rally Team.Austrian ace ready to prove potential on forthcoming asphalt rounds. The 555 Subaru World Rally Team announced today that Austrian driverAchim Mörtl will drive a Subaru Impreza WRC2002 for the team on theGerman and Italian rounds of the 2002 World Rally Championship.31-year-old Achim and his experienced German co-driver Klaus Wicha willcompete alongside regular team members Tommi Mäkinen and Petter Solberg, and will be nominated to score points for the Japanese manufacturer onboth events.Commenting on the signing, 555 Subaru Team Principal David Lapworth said:"Achim is clearly a very talented driver, and we've been following hiscareer for some time now, initially as a member of the Subaru Allstars, but also on rallies this year with the Power Horse team. Our 555 Subaruteam strategy for the rest of this year remains focussed on Tommi andPetter. The reason for giving Achim this opportunity is that we'relooking ahead to 2003 and longer term options.""We know Tommi and Petter will be with us next season, but as we've saidin the past, we will never rule out running a third car if there's achampionship benefit in doing so, and this is still the case. By runningAchim in Germany and Italy we're giving him the chance to prove what hecan do given the best car and support team.
