oldsmobile interceptor : Well, time for the old pharts to answer this one; even though I wasjust being born at the time under consideration... "Rocket" as a term for olds V8's goes back to the 1950's, when the oldsproduct really was something of a "rocket," and of course, the term hada great deal more cachet than it does now. The v8 they introduced wasreally a modern one, rather than one derived from engineering practicespre-war, and made the basic Olds V8, and particularly the higher-outputones, very fast indeed. These WERE my father's oldsmobiles (well, actually,Dad had a Studebaker Hawk, but that's a different story...), they weresome hot stuff in their day. Rocket stuck as the name through the yearsand I suppose they stopped using it when they went to the "corporate" v8in later years? I don't know this for a fact, just a surmise. There was an article on the "rocket" V8 in Cars and Parts or one of theother collector rags in the last couple months that would fill in theblanks in my RAM. db-> On older GM vehicles, I keep seeing people advertise them as-> having a 350 rocket or 455 rocket motor. What does this mean?
oldsmobile interceptor : It's just Oldsmobile's generic term for their V8s. Chevrolet used"Turbo-Jet", Buick used "Wildcat", etc. Most of the time such labelsmean nothing. Ford products usually had the displacement, carb type, and fuel type, something like "289 - 2V - Regular Fuel". If it says "BOSS 302", "BOSS351", "BOSS 429", "289 High Performance", "427 SOHC", "Cobra Jet", or"Police Interceptor", you may have something very interesting. ThePolice Interceptor and Cobra Jet engines were usually identical exceptfor the valve covers. While we're on Olds engines, I've always wondered, what does 442 stand for? Oldsmobile "Rocket" is their emblem. They still use the rocket emblem, just not on the engine. BTW, what engines are actually Oldsmobile? I know the Quad 4 and Quad OHCare, but which V6's? --Warren Gill 217/793-2350x151 ---------------------------------------- --------------------------------------- Feather by feather the goose is plucked. {John Ray}I don't know about that. My friend has a 67 442, and its got an automatictranny. I think after about '65 it didn't mean those things anymore - too much demand for an automatic. Just like you can get an SHO from Ford with an automatic. oldsmobile interceptor : --************************************** **************************************** * Bob Martel - Pseudo Sys Admin | Lady Luck must have been ** Levin College - Cleveland State U | a wonderful girl, ** | She's never been a friend of mine! ** | The 3B1 LIVES! **************************************** *************************************** 4 - 4 Barrel Carburetor 4 - 4 Speed Manual Transmission 2 - Dual ExhaustIn the late 60's, quite a few of the cars were ordered with automaticsso Oldsmobile redesignated the 4-4-2 numbers as: 4 - 400 Cubic Inch V-8 4 - 4 Barrel Carburetor 2 - Dual ExhaustFor most years, you could order a 350 cu. in. instead of the 400 or 455so the name didn't really hold true. Up until '76 you could get the 455 which still gave you the first "4". Then in '75 with the energy crisis, all models were converted to singleexhaust so the "2" lost it's significance altogether. It is sad that significant names are lost to the Marketing folks. Delta98 and 88 had real significant meanings, too!Wes Fujii___________________________________ _____________________________ ___ ___ ___ / / / // / / /__/ // / A real motor is an Oldsmobile Rocket 455 / HURST // / "This is NOT the new generation of Olds" / / / // /_______ /__/ /__// // ___ \ / // / \ \ Wes "BANZAI" Fujii / // /OLDS/ / Boise, Idaho / / \ \___/ / /__/ \_______/ oldsmobile interceptor : The Police Interceptors had aluminum intake manifolds and/or heads, butwere otherwise identical to other FE big-blocks, according to my bookon rebuilding Ford big-blocks. (I wish I could find that book; ithas loads of info such as the above in it.)At any rate, Ford's engine names all have some kind of meaningattached. Some, like BOSS, Cobra Jet, and Hi-Po indicate higherperformance engines, while some indicate differences betweenengines--like 351 Windsor, 351 Cleveland, and 351 Modified, where Windsor and Cleveland are engine plants producing differentdesigns of the same displacement; the Modified simply indicatesthat it is a third design (a de-stroked 400 CID).James P. You take away all he has and all he's ever gonna have." --Will Munny, "Unforgiven" While Chevy didn't have the number of names for enginesthat Ford used, a few of them meant something. There were theturbo-thrift sixs, turbo-air for the Corvair, turbo-fire for thesmaller, lower HP V-8s and Turbo-Jet for the Bigger and/or higherHP V-8s. oldsmobile interceptor : I think Olds used the Jetfire name for a turbo-chargedengine they used in the early '60s. The 4-4-2 originally was usedin adds talking about the sporty version of the F-85/Cutlass which camewith a four barrel carb, four speed transmission, and dual exhaust. That damn plastic coated timing gear was NOT on of GM's betterideas! I helped a friend rebuild two different Rocket 350s that hadthe coating from the gear clog-up the oil sump. Made those old enginessound like diesels. I was always afraid the gear would let go in my'67 Chevelle, but in 140000 miles it never did. The old rocket engine pretty much died when the "corporateengine" concept came into being. I do remember being surprised severalyears later at an autoshow when Old's had put out a high-perf versionof the RWD Cutlass Supreme (mid '80s I think) and I found a genuineRocket V8 under the hood, right around 300 cid I think. It wasn'tgold, though :^( .--************************************** **************************************** * Bob Martel - Pseudo Sys Admin | Lady Luck must have been ** Levin College - Cleveland State U | a wonderful girl, ** | She's never been a friend of mine! ** | The 3B1 LIVES! **************************************** ***************************************
