oldsmobile calais : I've got a 1987 Oldsmobile Calais, and its got a problem with thelighting on the instrument panel and radio. Basically, when you turn on the headlights, the clock illumination goes out, andthe panel lights (speedo, indicators, etc) dont comeon. It's been this way for about 3 years now, but every so often, theywill work when you turn the lights on (in the past 3 years, its worked 4times that I can remember).A friend of mine had a 1988 Olds Calais that did the same thing, and agirl we both knew had a Calais (though I dont know what year) which alsodid it. Ive pulled next to one other one at night on the road andlooked over and noticed their panels were dark, too. In each instance, the style of the Calais were all different in some way (mine is a 2door, hers is a 4 door, my friends was a GT Sport, etc...).Is this something that Oldsmobile has released some "official" newsabout? If so, where can I find out about it? Also, since Im posting..anyone know whats causing it? :)
oldsmobile calais : Dug out my 1987 Olds Service Manual (since its been awhile sinceI've worked on a Calais). First, do the Charge and Temp indicator lights come on if you startthe car with the lights on? If they do, then the grounds are probablyOK - we can turn our attention to the panel light dimming system. These cars do not pass all the current for all the panel lightsthrough the dimmer switch on the dashboard - they use a dimmer module, which is really just a power transistor. What happens is if one of thelight bulbs dies by shorting out, the poor transistor dies (instead ofblowing the fuse - fues are too slow). This module is located under thedashboard to the left of the steeing column. It is attached to thelower instrument tie bar by 2 screws. You'll have to pull the leftsound panel and the lower steering colum trim (the plastic piece rightbelow the steering column) to get to the module. One way to check and see if the module is the problem is to jumper thepins on the module connector that have the green/black and the graywires connected. With the parking lights on, the dash panel lightsshould be on full brightness. If that is the case, replace the module. oldsmobile calais : * 127k miles* 1 previous owner (my father)* 4 cyl (still has it's get-up-and-go!)* 2 door coupe* grey exterior / grey interior* AM/FM/cassette* cruise control, rear defrost* 30 mpg* new-ish tires (10k or so on them), aluminum wheels* well cared for, good condition* safety inspection through 3/98* comfortable ride, smooth handling* never smoked in* low insurance costNow for the truth in advertising:* it's got a 20" or so crack at the bottom of the front windshield - it doesn't block your vision, and it hasn't progressed in the last 10k miles* A/C doesn't work. I suspect a leak in the lines - should be an inexpensive fix, but it has R-12 (choc full of CFCs) refrigerant, so a fix could cost $250 or so.This really is a great car for tooling around.
