infiniti fx : AFAIK, heel strike occurs only on SWB bikes, not LWB bikes. I did readthat insurance/liability considerations were the reason the Avatar 1000(SWB) never went into production - instead the LWB Avatar 2000 wasdeveloped.High end gears are limited mainly by chainring/crankset availability. Most triple cranksets come with 52/42/30 teeth which limits gearing witha 559-mm drivewheel. Larger chainrings are expensive ($50+) and areoften not available with ramps and pins so they shift poorly. With a406-mm drive wheel, either huge (70T+), expensive custom rings areneeded or an expensive, heavy internal gear hub (e.g. 3x7) needs to beused. The other alternative is a mid-drive set-up (e.g. Rotator) which is alsoexpensive due to the lack of standard (i.e. MTB and road bike)components.Tom Sherman1999 Blue RANS TAILWIND/63 with green bodysock2000 Red RANS ROCKEThow does your heel strike a wheel when it's under your knees and yourfeet/crank are on a boom well ahead of it?snipon a bike that costs you over a thousand dollars i don't consider 50expensive.so you don't spin out on flats with a Pursuit? what's the avg largefront gear ring?
infiniti fx : See for a side view of the bike.Notice how close the circle formed by the crank ends comes to the frontwheel. I trimmed the front fender on my ROCKET since the cranks wouldhit the fender in tight turns. If the boom on a SWB bike is long enoughthat foot/wheel interference does not occur it leads to two problems: 1)the boom ends up being too flexible unless it is made of largediameter thickwall tubing, 2) the weight distribution is heavily biasedto the front which can lead to poor handling and makes rear brakesuseless. For the side view of a typical LWB see: . A rider would have to have VERYlarge feet to even come close to hitting the front wheel.I am not sure what the exact standard gearing currently used by Rotatoris (this has changed with component changes/upgrades) but the gear rangeis approximately 20-150 gear inches.Tom Sherman1999 Blue RANS TAILWIND/63 with green bodysock2000 Red RANS ROCKETSNIPi was looking at pics and noticed this. Does the toe of your foot everhit the front wheel on turns in CLWB? I'm STILL mystified by why sofew (relative to the 21 SWB, 12) companys produce LWB. infiniti fx : On some CLWB/LWB bikes with V-brakes it is possible for the crank to hitthe brake cable. Bob Bryant reported that RCN's BikeE FX test bike hadthis problem, and it is apparently the reason that RANS uses a miniV-brake on the GLISS. I occasionally have this occur on my TAILWIND.Tom Sherman1999 Blue RANS TAILWIND/63 with green bodysock2000 Red RANS ROCKETEvery time I ride my Pursuit I'm amazed, all over again, at what agreat bike it is. Its comfortable, fast and a great working piece ofequipment. Call Ed.Talk with your closest recumbent clubs and dealers for leads. With someresearch, you can get very good deals on used recumbents. In the past I've bought a Presto and a P-38, each with less than 200miles on them for $1,000 per bike and a T-E for $900.We kept the T-E for 7 years and about 18,000 miles. The Presto and P-38have rolled past 10 years and about 35,000 miles each. They also carry the mostexpensive BikeE models so i'm getting they're not into entry levelsales. Tho that Pursuit IS a hell of a deal. I'm looking at aThunderbolt for $750 but it'll have to be shipped. What does that coston avg. ?I've thought about waiting it out i actually FOUND a Nils Palm BUT itwent up for sale in JULY so I'm SURE it's long gone, dangit. infiniti fx : I've been studying the in-car camera shots from the MacLarens and theWilliams cars. First of all, I don't buy the argument one or twopeople put forward that Senna's camera mount was loose causing hiscamera's shots to bounce around more than Nigel's. There was a briefview from Berger's car and his car was bouncing around even moredramatically than Senna's while Nigel looked like he was driving aCadillac around the circuit. The second thing I noticed had to do with the way the activesuspension seemed to respond on some corners. The camera shot showsthe right front suspension. On some left hand corners, during whichthe right front corner is the weighted corner, the suspension actuallypushes the right tire down (or the car up depending on your frame ofreference). This would be opposite of what happens on a normallysuspended car since the weighted corner would be pushing the tire upinto the car. The action of the active suspension on the Williamswould seem to me to make sense since it would tend to keep the weightof the car more evenly distributed and tend to keep the unweightedtire from lifting. infiniti fx : A few years back on the active suspension Lotus, I remember seeingESPN do a "Track Fact" feature on the car. The Lotus had a pitot tubeon the front nose of the car to measure the car's speed. They hooked apiece of tubing to the pitot tube and John B. blew into the tubing. This caused the suspension to stiffen and raise the car an inch ortwo. Has anyone seen any evidence of a pitot tube on the Williams?Doesn't seem to me like they would really need one. The computershould be able to figure out the speed of the car since it knows theRPMs of the engine and the currently selected gear.-- ---------------------------------------- -------------------------------------Joh n F. Snow INET: Evans & Sutherland Computer Corp. Salt Lake City, Utah America Online: JohnSnow GEnie: J.SNOW2David Hobbs said that the Williams cars uses oil whereas the Lotuses usedair. He also said that the active suspension's role is somewhat differentin the Williams where their primary importance is in maintaining a constantground clearance so that the vacuum under the car stayed intact.
