1965 oldsmobile : [experiences with the local GM dealer, Oldsmobile customer service andthe Oldsmobile History Center deleted for brevity...]I'd like to thank everyone for their thoughtful comments. I went to thedealership and had a look at the kit. Everything is in a small box thatcontains:The kit was not strictly plug-and-play as some had guessed. All wiresneeded to be spliced into the wiring harness either by soldering andwrapping with electrical tape, or by using the butt-splice crimpconnectors, so this would compromise an absolutely faithful originalcar, but I personally could accept the trade-off. The control boxitself could either be screwed into an appropriate place on the firewall(uggh!!) or tie-wrapped under the dashboard (much better! :-).red: 12V input (connect to any full-time 12V power source, with an in-line fuse, thoughtful touch)pink: ignition "on" input (connect to ignition switch)tan: low-voltage power to lights while in "DRL" mode (connect to headlight power input)brown: disable input when actual lights are turned on (connect to parking light power input)Uh, taillights? :-) You don't need to run a jumper all the way to theback of the car; find the body harness where it emerges from under thecarpet and plugs into something in the vicinity of the fusebox (if notthe fusebox itself). You're looking for about six wires -- um... pink,purple, brown, yellow, green, tan; something like that -- and the brownis the (usual) GM taillight circuit. One possible snag is that theharness I describe is probably not stranded wire but solid-core; infact, it looks like aluminum. It functions as a low-resistance, non-flexway to deliver power to the trunk area, usually connecting to copperstranded wire in the vicinity of the left rear wheel, inside the trunk.You might also consider using the dash lighting circuit (gray), althoughthat's at reduced voltage.
1965 oldsmobile : Things might get interesting when you flip your high-beams on after dark,though.Is this use-the-low-beams instruction required perhaps because the kitdoesn't drop the power very much? Maybe it would drive the high beamsat such high power that people would be blinking their lights at you.Well... (wild-assed guess alert here:) What if you hooked that input toyour alternator/generator warning light? When the light is on, theengine isn't running and the DRLs would remain off. (And, for thatmatter, if you did start having electrical problems and wound up runningon the battery, this connection would kill the DRLs for you.)Please do. I'd like to install this kit in my wife's K wagon, if MoParnever gets around to making their own retrofit kit.The easiest way (IMHO) to wire up daytime running lights to an older caris to trace the power to the lighting circuit and change the power feedover to over to a circuit that is switched on by the ignition. IE the coilcircuit.This gives you the option of DRL or not and does not interfere with yournormal light operation and leaves all lights on if you forgt to engagethem at night.

1965 oldsmobile : I recently heard that GM was going to discontinue production ofOldsmobiles. Has anyone else heard anything about this? Thanks, Dave According to the press releases, since Olds only sold 300,000 cars last year, they are going to stop development of new models, then cease production. Then GM of Europe will be dropping Billions of $$ into Saab, a company that has never sold more than 50,000 cars in any given model year. Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?Actually, I heard that within 2 years, the experts are predicting Fordto overtake GM as the top manufacturer of automobiles in NorthAmerica. First time since the 30s.I believe the folks at GM blew it sometime ago. Oldsmobile is just the1st to go. Saturn will probably be next... well if that's true, I'll be safer driving a used Trabant than anything GM or Ford produces.Aw, who drives to be safe anyway.Let me go in style. I havebeen a passenger in one. The bare plastic or glass fiber panelsamplifies the sound of the two stroke to an incredible racket. Sincethe cars does not rust, they are still around somewhere, they nowhave cult status; in fact they have become very expensive to buy.
